Promoting Political Reform
For
more than 100 years California has been at the forefront of government
reform, leading to such innovations as the initiative process, the
right of citizens to recall elected officials, and independent
commissions to set the pay and benefits of state legislators. I support
an independent commission to set legislative district boundaries.
I
believe in a part-time legislature of citizens, not professional
politicians. The California Legislature should not be compensated for
the period of time the state budget or other critical actions are late.
I support reasonable campaign finance laws that provide for full
disclosure of major contributors and true sources of contributions to
candidates for public office; I also support the repeal of the
unworkable provisions of federal, state and local campaign regulations
that needlessly limit Americans’ free speech rights.
I
support banning the use of mandatory union dues and fees to support or
oppose candidates for public office or ballot initiatives. Every
Californian should have the freedom to work without being compelled to
pay dues or fees to a labor union.
Californians
have the right to organize their political parties, and those parties
should have the right to nominate and support the candidates of their
party members’ choice.
The government should not interfere with the operation of political
parties, including the ability of parties to communicate with their
members without restriction.
We hold our elected officials accountable to the highest ethical
standards in government, regardless of the standards applied by and to
other political parties. Lobbyists for special interests should be
required to report their affiliations and their spending on behalf of
their clients.
