Former Congressman, Bay Area Assembly Member and Former S.F. Police Chief Endorse Harmeet K. Dhillon for State Assembly

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 22, 2008
Contact:  Dhillon ’08 Community Affairs Liaison Alisa Farenzena, (415) 706-0407

Today, former U.S. Congressman Tom Campbell and California Assembly Member Guy Houston endorsed Harmeet K. Dhillon’s campaign for California Assembly, District 13.

Campbell, who recently launched an exploratory committee for a possible gubernatorial bid, served most recently as dean of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and is currently a partner at an international law firm. In endorsing her, Campbell lauded Dhillon’s accomplishments, commitment to freedom and fiscal responsibility.

These statewide figures join such San Francisco community leaders as former Chief of Police Tony Ribera – who endorsed Dhillon last week – in their support of Dhillon’s historic campaign for State Assembly. Dhillon, an immigrant from India, is the first Sikh woman to win a major party nomination for state legislative office in California history, and the only Indian American in California running for state office this November.

“I am very proud to have the support of local law enforcement, Bay Area elected officials such as Guy Houston and national leaders of Tom Campbell’s stature,” Dhillon said, adding that the endorsements build on the momentum of her campaign kickoff last Monday, when nearly 100 supporters packed a private dining room at Fior d’Italia in Dhillon’s Russian Hill neighborhood.

“If elected, I promise to apply the skills I have learned in running a small business in San Francisco’s over-regulated environment, and my skills in bipartisan consensus-building, to achieve responsible, meaningful and positive change for all Californians,” Dhillon said. “I hope in the coming days many other California leaders will come forward to support my campaign to change the way San Francisco does business.”

Houston, who represents Assembly District 15, is the only Republican from the Bay Area currently serving in the California Legislature. Houston and Dhillon recently shared the stage at the Fremont Sikh Temple’s International Turban Day celebrations, where both were awarded honors by the Sikh community.
